Exciting News!!
Horizon Europe Programme for Balla.
We are thrilled to announce that Balla CRD, in collaboration with ACT Architects Ballina and Mayo County Council, has successfully secured EU Horizon funding for the BLUEPRINT project! This achievement underscores the strong foundation of work already established with the Balla community and the County Council. As one of only five projects selected across Europe and the sole Irish town to receive this funding, Balla is set to become a leading example of community-led revitalisation. The three-and-a-half-year, €5 million BLUEPRINT programme aims to foster sustainable and accessible urban spaces, ultimately improving living conditions for all.
Balla Pilot Site (Ireland) The pilot project in Balla will focus on key objectives, including:
1. Reviving Vacant Buildings: Transform empty buildings for mixed uses by involving locals in design through workshops and digital simulations. Emphasise sustainability, community needs, and heritage preservation.
2. Re-imagining Market Square: Turn Market Square into a lively, pedestrian-friendly hub using co-design and digital tools to ensure accessibility, inclusivity, and alignment with community vision.
3. Building an Active Mobility Network: Expand walking and cycling paths with input from residents. Use modern technologies to co-create safe, accessible routes that connect the town and support active transport.
4. Restoring Balla’s Heritage: Digitally preserve and upgrade historic landmarks with community input. Blend energy efficiency with cultural integrity using participatory mapping and simulation tools.
5. Model for Rural Regeneration: Balla will pilot the Town Centre First approach, offering a scalable model for rural renewal through sustainable infrastructure, mobility, and public space upgrades.
