On Wednesday, 7th March 2024, Balla CRD hosted the launch of the Balla Autism Friendly Town programme with a large audience in attendance at Balla Community Centre.

A panel of speakers including; CEO of AsIAm, Adam Harris, Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District, Al McDonnell, AsIAm Manager & Autistic Advocate, Amanda McGuinness, and Chairman of Balla CRD, Peter Monaghan , delivered the programme overview and delved into the importance of providing Autism-Friendly accessibility in our community.

A variety of inclusive projects and initiatives within the community of Balla were discussed and promoted such as the now Autism-Friendly Community Centre with visual aids, calming areas, and the LEADER-funded Portable Sensory Play Unit. Balla CRD is also leading the way in inclusivity with the upcoming opening of Balla Biodiversity & Sensory Garden in May, whilst the old courthouse is expected to be converted and opened as Balla Digital Hub later this year.

Balla CRD is delighted to be collaborating with AsIAm - Ireland's Autism Charity in cohesion with the community at large, and looks forward to further evolving and developing the #samechance ethos for Autistic people and people with additional needs.

The event was opened and closed with a beautiful rendition of Lauren Daigle's song "You Say" by three local school students - Hailey Golden, Leah McCann and Clodagh Mellet.
