The exact origins of the name is difficult to pinpoint there have however been many explanations, one is

Ball Alainn which is taken as the Irish name for Balla derives from a fanciful etymology found in the 15th Century book of lismore which tells the life of St. Mochua of Balla and mentions a Well which describes as being Topur Ballaluinn - that is "a lovely Limbed wall", hence the name Balla.
